BROUGHTON ISLAND – Midweek Trip

When: Wed 6th Dec to Friday 8th December

Where: Broughton Island
Grade : 3, Strong Grade 2 paddlers will be considered.

A 3-day midweek trip to Broughton Island camping at Esmerelda Cove for two nights.

Day One: Starting at Jimmy’s Beach, Hawks Nest (on the northern side of Port Stephens) we will paddle via Yacaaba Head and Cabbage Tree Island before crossing to Broughton Island where we will set up camp and if time allows explore the island on foot.

Day Two: Subject to conditions we will spend the day exploring the many features of the Broughton Island group (such as caves, beaches, Fisherman Passage and Cons Cleft).

Day Three: We depart Broughton Island and return to cars via Bennetts Beach (depending on conditions we may take in some other features of the area). We will aim to be back around lunchtime to allow time for packup and return to Sydney.

We will be paddling approximately 20-25km per day (2 days with laden kayaks) and with open crossings of 10-14km.  This is remote camping so you’ll need to be self-sufficient in terms of food, clothing, shelter etc. Plans will be subject to weather conditions at the time and may change.

Kayaks and kit to Grade 3 please and do not forget your helmet as we plan to do some rock gardening and surf landings.  Strong Grade 2 paddlers will be considered.

Camping sites at Broughton Island will be organised (at a cost of approximately $34/person total), however, participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements if arriving at Jimmys Beach on the Tuesday preceding the start of the trip.

Your trip leaders will be Nick Blacklock and Adrian Clayton.

Please email Nick at nickblacklock(at)ymail.com if you have any queries regarding the trip.  Otherwise, use the online registration facility to secure your spot. If trip is full email me to be put on a waiting list.
